We need to talk about the low-rise trend

Did you know fashion trends recycle every 20ish years? And many times, new or returning trends signal some kind of societal shift. Remember my wide-leg sweatpant theory?! Today, I have another fashion history/trend deep dive for you… one that more people need to be talking about.

Low-rise is back

And we love! So cute. But this trend’s return from the 00s may not be as innocent as it seems. Do you remember what else was in style the last time low-rise jeans were in? Let me give you a hint.

Do you see it?

I had a suspicion that the return of low-rise is a signal that beauty standards have shifted yet again. I felt like the correlation was correlating… SO I went onto Google Trends and typed in two of the hottest things that people are talking about right now, juuust to see if there was a correlation.

And guess what I found?

google trends glp1 popularity and low-rise trend

Just as the low-rise trend has gained popularity, so has interest in GLP-1s. If you’re thinking noo no that’s just a coincidence… I found more. As interest in Pilates has trended up over the last 5 years, searches for how to get a bigger butt have decreased.

The searches are proving that slimmer physiques are trending… again.

Do fashion AND beauty standards cycle?

We know fashion recycles itself, but I’m surprised to see us going back to the harmful body trends of the 2000s. It’s only been 10 years since Kim K. literally broke the internet with her curvy physique and made that the IT body type. Today, with the return of the VS Fashion Show, it’s clear that thin is in.

My question

All of this makes me wonder: If fashion is a reflection of society, then what is it saying about us?

What do you think?
